As I write this, I find myself reflecting on what motivated me to assume the coordinator role for the Seminar Series for Integrated Biomedical Sciences at Umeå University (SSIBS@UmU).

It starts with my passion for interdisciplinary research. With everyday technological advancement and increasing utility of the state of the art technologies in various scientific fields, I strongly believe that the most exciting discoveries happen when researchers working in various disciplines interact and collaborate. SSIBS@UmU gave me a chance to build a space where these intersections could thrive. Due to my interest in interdisciplinary research I see the potential for this seminar series to strengthen our network, foster knowledge exchange, and inspire innovations at both national and international levels.

I started coordinating the SSIBS@UmU (previously called NISS) last year. As a first-time organizer of an interdisciplinary event spanning multiple departments, I faced some challenges at the begining. But with passage of time and the support of colleagues at various departments, we managed to host speakers from around the world. Since then, we have covered talks ranging from bacterial infections and cancer progression to the science of sleep.

Looking ahead to this year’s seminars

We are expanding the seminar series by joining the UCMR community alongside our existing partners — the Department of Molecular Biology and the Department of Clinical Microbiology, MIMS, and WCMM. We have scheduled a great scientific programme for this semester, and I look forward to your participation in the seminars.

Join Us!

Attending the SSIBS@UmU seminars will provide you with the opportunity to discuss exciting science with visiting top-notch scientists. I warmly invite you to join us at our next seminar—your presence is what makes this series come alive. Together, we can continue building and sustaining a vibrant, interdisciplinary research community at Umeå University. See you soon at the upcoming sessions of the SSIBS@UmU seminar series!

PS let me share highlights from last year’s speakers

Dr. Cinzia Allegrucci from University of Nottingham talked about targeting triple negative breast cancer: the search for precise biomarkers

Dr. John Adams from University of South Florida gave a talk, supersaturation mutagenesis reveals adaptive rewiring of essential genes among malaria parasites

Dr. Jun Zhu from University of Pennsylvania discussed the role of Vibrio cholerae’s effector molecules in host pathogenesis

Dr. Klaus Martiny from University of Copenhagen talked about the Impact of room orientation and time cues on sleep and mood

Dr. Boris Zhivotovsky from Karolinska Institute discussed the significance of cross-talk between various cell death modalities.

Dr. Greetje Vande Velde from KU Leuven gave a talk on decoding host-pathogen dynamics in fungal infections: multimodal imaging for better therapeutic strategies.

Dr. Tsutomu Suzuki from the University of Tokyo gave a talk on expanding world of tRNA modifications in health and disease.

These moments perfectly capture the essence of SSIBS@UmU’s mission: to bring cutting-edge science to Umeå University by hosting leading scientists from around the world.
